Dawn of the Fox by Tatchit Dawn of the Fox by Tatchit
An older artbook page I decided to revamp a bit and show as an illustration example for future commissions.  There are quit a few bits that bother me that I may go back and fix down the road.

Gunna put a list-o-things I need to change here, if you see any gross stuff, lemme know:

*lighting has no defined source/sporadic, darken the fox's right side so it appears to be backlit and not studio lit
*branches are migrating to the left, probably doing some mating dance idfk
*composition needs to be broken up and refined, bottom is very heavy, we are not drawing pears, maybe another fallen log slanting to the left so the eye goes around the page easier
*fox's tail is ugly, everything must be pretty
*move that stupid tree behind the fox to the left some, it creates a tangent that splits the composition

This is such a stunning piece, I could just stare at it for hours.
It's for an artbook you said - Any chance it's already available? If yes, I'd love to buy it. :)

I find it beautiful as is. One of the best fox pieces I've seen. After your adventures to improve this, do you think prints might become available? I'm just so in love with your "Dawn of the Fox"! <3

I think this is gorgeous. Though I'm really glad you pointed out the flaws. It's interesting to see the self-critique of an artist above my skill level, and I think it will help me know what to look for in my own artwork to improve. You should do it more often if you can. :D

I'm really glad that you wrote those points in the desc, since I didn't see anything wrong with the drawing at all. You mentioned things I never would've even thought of, I feel wiser haha
IMO the painting is gorgeous, you never fail to amaze me OuO especially the lighting and atmosphere ughh how do you even !
The only thing I noticed composition-wise, is that since the tail is pointing downwards, it sort of leads the eye that way too.. to a bunch of empty darkness. So I mean maybe if the tail curled even a tiny bit, it would pull the viewer's eyes back to the fox.
Also question: How did you get so good at perspectives? is it just practice or is it magic eue

this is older, so after some time after having a few art classes and do thumbnails more often for illustrations I tend to be critical of my stuff.  The tail is weird, my sister said the same thing, it just slices right through the composition.  And now I'm a tangent hawk and try really hard not to make them but boy did they crop up here like crab grass.  I:  Even the trees in the bg create a subtle tangent.  As for atmosphere, I just glaze over the bg with a light color to blur stuff out a little so it's not so stark in appearance.  Perspective can be done pretty easily with one, two, three ect. point, even with natural environments.  I don't use it literally for everything, but you can plot points and try to base your scene around it so everything flows.  The bottom is really dark and heavy, so I mentioned putting some other log there or something to lighten it up, hopefully that works when I get to changing this.

Did you learn all this in school? Or was it mostly self taught..? also have you ever considered making tutorials? ouo
Sorry aha it's just that a bunch of these things, such as the tangents, I've never even heard of. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to seeing what changes you make to your drawing c:

I'm mostly self taught, but I am now an art major and have learned a good deal of valuable info from my art professor, especially on things like composition and balance.  I started out young and owe it to Jurassic Park (dinosaurs were my first subjects) It's incredibly draining compared to the classes I had last semester (chemistry, trig, micro economics, and painting.)  I put more hours into one project than I do all hours on homework for some classes I had in previous semesters.  I:  It's a challenge because I'm competing with myself and working with materials and mediums I don't care much for or have no experience with.  I do pursue personal goals as well though; I love watching documentaries about everything and they help me push through long nights.  :')

I have done tutorials on fur, but they're fairly generic and don't really delve into style or how I approach drawing.  I'm in the long process of creating an artbook and I want to include some full length tuts that I hope people will find useful.  Though it seems a long way off from where I am now as I don't have a whole lot done.  U:

This is pretty motivating since I'm following a pretty similar path; I'm self taught as well and have been arting ever since I can remember, and want to major in art too (graphic design, specifically). ANd wow I completely agree art is a lot more draining.. last semester I had mostly arts courses which included several projects with problem solving and a whole lot of creativity and I spent so much time and effort on everything, and now in second semester I'm stuck with math and sciences and most of the days I just sit in class bored :I

But hey you should upload some of the things you're working on in school, that'd be neat to see ;u;
And really Jurassic Park? I never would've thought haha !
if you're ever wondering what type of tutorials to include in your book, maybe something about what goes through your head (mostly composition-wise) when you draw landscapey things and such? Unless it flows naturally from your soul in which case there is no hope but anyways
this is a very disorganized wall of text I'msorry

I'm definitely going to save up for that art book for when it comes out, be that in 20 years, I'll wait patiently vuv
Cheers!~

Your list of changes are technically correct, but I think artistically you shouldn't change any of it.  Here's why:

*lighting has no defined source/sporadic, darken the fox's right side so it appears to be backlit and not studio lit

The weird lighting makes it look like a fairy-tale, sort of dreamlike or maybe magical.  Great illustration style for a children's book.

*branches are migrating to the left, probably doing some mating dance idfk

Creates movement.

*composition needs to be broken up and refined, bottom is very heavy, we are not drawing pears, maybe another fallen log slanting to the left so the eye goes around the page easier

Blackness gives further sense of a dream or vision. Also gives a sense of possible but remote danger. Also the heaviness seems classical like a style from an older generation of illustrators.

*fox's tail is ugly, everything must be pretty

This allows more focus on the fox's face and shoulder posture.  A shadowed, indistinct and less interesting tail avoids distracting from the look on the fox's face.

*move that stupid tree behind the fox to the left some, it creates a tangent that splits the composition

Perhaps, but to me this gives an impression that you've captured a more realistic woodland scene -- not everything in nature can be carefully composed.  You need the blackness of that tree to offset the heaviness of the black in the lower portion, plus need it to help the fox stand out from the otherwise similar background colors.

Basically, I think the picture is just incorrect enough to actually be better art than if composed it more carefully!
