hmm, never posted this here. copy/paste from FA and Tumblr:

Another WIP for my artbook.

I wanted to illustrate Kurai handling the Eclipse Cross for the first time (as it is much like a key to escape the veil surrounding the House-a lavish prison in which he was kept.) Although the Cross harbors a curse that eventually burrows into and kills the wearer he values true freedom over being kept behind closed doors. This desperate break out was expected by his ‘guardian’ and House keeper/ Ranson. Ranson saw Kurai much like a son, but by House law he was forced to allow Kurai to walk away with the cursed cross. (The old Senate rulers threw this law in with the curse so the escaped prisoner would pay dearly for their attempts at trying to flee.)

Originally the Eclipse Cross was made because the veil surrounding the House had a loophole, one that the Cross could bound over. It allowed a prisoner freedom by simply walking through the veil unscathed. The technology that creates the veil is faltered in this one way, and the elements that create it are scrambled when the Cross interacts with it. The Senate had found out quickly and backlashed by embedding a curse that attacked the wearer until he/she is dead. The curse then retreats back within the Cross to lay dormant until the next prisoner thieves it.

The curse is ‘awakened’ by none other than a prisoner of the House. Meaning a non-prisoner could walk away from the veil without the curse attacking. Prisoners are marked when they sign a blood contract with Ranson at the beginning of their sentence.
