Weekly Speedpaint Challenge: Statue by Tatchit Weekly Speedpaint Challenge: Statue by Tatchit
Weekly speedpaint challenge at :iconda-speedpaint: This weeks challenge was 'statue.' I had gone through five or six studies until I reached these three. (some you can see in the speedpaint dump-which went over the time limit of 20mins)

All these fall right around the 20min mark.

To reach this, I had to really cut down on how much extras I wanted to throw in. Instead I focused more on the object instead of the surroundings. Another weakness of mine is the use of custom brushes that can really pack a punch when you're limited on time. I'm picky and I shouldn't be haha.

would you have any interest in touching up the second one if I would like it for a room on WH?

I meant more of a room for me to use only, but I am pretty sure a lot of these would sell if you posted them, for either individual permissions or multiple permissions for each room.

Ohoh haha, I could probably do a little more to a few of these for room use. If you want, you can crop that one out and doodle on it yourself/mod it the way you want. :)

I love these dilapidated statue heads and their marshy surroundings. <3

Only thing I dislike is that I can't travel to see those locations IRL, because i'd really like to! XD

Yeah, some of these I'd like to revisit, redo, and put lots of detail into them. I might try to do that sometime.

I lately spent about 3 hours in background practise and it didn't look anywhere near these three pics... it looked just like the drawing of some 3 year old child.
...those here look freakin' awesome~

I try to practice speedpainting everyday almost. Sometimes I don't really push myself with time, but rather the tone and feel of the landscape. Here you get a hazy, lonely feel in the middle of a swampy area. Sometimes choosing a color palate to work with can really help too. Say you practice blues, then mix pink with blues in the next study, then pink, blues, and yellows in the one after. This can help build color practice. :) I'm weak with using a wide variety of colors, and will be doing just this with a few studies in the future.

yeah... I guess that's the other point. I haven't that much time to practise every day...
you just draw those landscapes...those scenes out of your mind, right?

Yep-these are all out of my head. XD I will admit that I was inspired by a photo I saw on Tumblr a while back of a statue's head in water, with some native children sitting on it. It was really mellow and natural so I wanted to show something along those lines. (:

yeah... there's a special athmosphere in those scenes. ^^
and just one more thing - do you use photoshop?(because I actually can't handle the brushes I got with photoshop elements... they're anything but not smooth... when I want to draw smaller lines with a... 70pixel brush(for example) it doesn't want to work as good as when I'm using SAI...)

Yes, I use Photoshop cs5. I normally don't use very large brushes once I get all my blocking done. But they are very useful for getting basic shapes. My rule of thumb is work big to small-blocking, shadow, then light, then small details which are usually small highlights and shadows. I'm not sure how Sai works with brushes, but I get fairly good results when switching brushes in PS. The issue is that some brushes can create lag when sized too large. (usually brushes with textures and such cause this issue.)

It's probably my computer's processor because Photoshop has been logged on my computer to take up huge amounts of CPU when in use, but meh-it does it's job. XD
